The National Equality Party and the Swiss Press Club invite you to a seminar to draw the attention of the international community to the ongoing civil and human rights violations in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Since 1947, the residents of these regions have suffered due to the invasion and illegal occupation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit-Baltistan, on October 22, 1947, by tribal forces supported by the state. Today, demographic changes are being forcibly introduced to further suppress the legitimate voices of the people resisting this unlawful occupation.

This occupation, rooted in a complex history, has subjected the inhabitants of these regions to severe and inhumane conditions. These circumstances have cast a long and dark shadow over the lives of individuals, particularly those advocating for human rights, political freedoms, journalism, and social activism. Brave individuals who champion these causes have become victims of brutal mistreatment and gross human rights violations, calling for urgent global attention.

The people of AJK and GB have been placed under tight control, with their legal representatives stripped of the rights to legislate, formulate policies, or undertake welfare initiatives for their communities. At the same time, the region’s natural resources are being exploited without providing any benefits to the indigenous people—the rightful owners of the land and its wealth. Human rights advocates and political activists in Gilgit-Baltistan face severe restrictions on their movements due to the enforcement of laws under the Fourth Schedule. Despite peaceful protests demanding basic rights such as access to food and the right to life, these fundamental rights continue to be denied.

This dire situation has resulted in grave human rights violations against the people of AJK and GB, warranting the immediate and urgent attention of the global community.

The seminar will be followed by a light lunch.
