Al Jazeera’s journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by a direct shot to the head by Israeli forces on May 11, 2022, whilst covering the Israeli Forces’ raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. She was clearly identified as a member of the press with a helmet and protective jacket, but she was nonetheless blatantly targeted and killed, in an act many would label as an assassination.
Since the killing, there were a number of investigations done by American-based media organisations, and concluded she was killed by direct fire from Israeli soldiers. Further solidifying the findings by media organisations, United Nations Human Right Council issued its report on June 24, 2022, asserting that the fatal shot came from Israeli forces.
This struggle is not only about Shireen but about every journalist whose truth has been silenced. It’s time to end the impunity and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
