Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN) and the International Press Institute (IPI), together with their many international partners, have long been active in the promotion of journalist safety. These efforts include, on the one hand, strengthening mechanisms to hold states accountable for failing to ensure the safe exercise of journalism; and, on the other, encouraging best newsroom practices for the protection of journalists working in hostile environments.

The International Declaration is based on thorough research and analysis of existing international mechanisms in the area of journalist safety. More than 70 international experts contributed to this process, including members of the news media, representatives of intergovernmental human rights organisations, legal experts, press freedom advocates and human rights activists.
