The World Trade Organization is gearing up for its 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) from 26 to 29 February in Abu Dhabi.  But after the relative success of its last meeting in Geneva in 2022, when countries signed off on a series of trade deals, can MC13 live up to similar expectations?

Among the divisive issues on the table are the overdue reform of the WTO and its broken dispute settlement system; a technical but crucial deal on electronic commerce transactions; and asserting what the WTO’s role is on some of the world’s most pressing issues, from food and energy insecurity to greening trade and fighting the climate crisis.

Against a difficult geopolitical backdrop, will the WTO be able to produce meaningful results or will it disappoint and further cement its reputation as an outdated and dysfunctional organisation?

Journalists at Geneva Solutions, including contributor Maurizio Arseni, who recently interviewed its chief economist Ralph Ossa about the upcoming conference, and Kasmira Jefford, editor in chief, discuss.
