On July 5th 2022, the Global Survivors Fund, together with the Eastern-Ukrainian Center for Civic Initiatives (EUCCI), Blue Bird and Truth Hounds, publish the findings of a study on the Status of and Opportunities for Reparations for Survivors of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence in Ukraine. This Study comes in the fifth month of Russia’s escalated invasion of Ukraine and calls for urgent action from states and the international community in providing victims and survivors of conflict-related sexual violence with reparations.

Conflict-related sexual violence is ongoing in Ukraine, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and society. It has however been perpetrated since 2014 in the context of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea. Shortly after the start of Russia’s full-fledged invasion in February 2022, reports of rape and other forms of sexual violence against women, men and even children started to surface with fears that these reports are only the tip of the iceberg.

The Ukraine Reparations Study is part of a global study on reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) carried out by the Global Survivors Fund in partnership with civil society actors and victim associations in over 20 countries. It seeks to make recommendations for further action based on survivors’ needs and aspirations, identifying potential support available among key actors working in the field of CRSV.

About the Global Survivors Fund
The Global Survivors Fund (“GSF”) was launched in October 2019 by Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize laureates 2018. Its mission is to enhance access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence around the globe, thus responding to a gap long identified by survivors. GSF acts to provide interim reparative measures in situations where states or other parties are unable or unwilling to meet their responsibilities. GSF advocates for duty bearers as well as the international community to develop reparations programmes, and guides states and civil society by providing expertise and technical support for designing reparations programmes. GSF’s survivor-centric approach is the cornerstone of its work.
