On 31 August 2022, the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations has made public its decision that Spain has violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by suspending four leaders of Catalan independence parties – Messrs. Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Raül Romeva and Josep Rull – from their positions as members of the Catalan Parliament in 2018. This decision represents a key finding by an important international body that Spain’s repression of the Catalan independence movement has gravely violated human rights.
