According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the risks of an increase in trade wars combined with current geopolitical challenges cast a pall of uncertainty over the outlook for trade in 2025. Slower trade growth, the risk of higher tariffs, uncertainty about the emerging new international order. What are and what will be the consequences of geopolitical conflicts on international trade? What impact are sanctions against Russia, in particular, having on the disruption of supply chains?

Geneva is home to the three main organizations that legislate for a stable and fair international trade order: the WTO – whose ancestor, the GATT, was set up in Geneva as long ago as 1948 -, UNCTAD and the International Trade Centre, which advises SMEs in developing countries. Will Switzerland, which relies on economic exchanges with foreign countries to guarantee its international prosperity, continue to play this major role as a legislator of international trade?

The Geneva Press Club discusses this with Mr. Erwin Bollinger, Swiss Ambassador to the WTO and EFTA, and the head of the global shipping umbrella organization, Mr. Stéphane Graber, Managing Director of FIATA, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations.

Discussion followed by Q&A and aperitif.
