Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, Sudan has descended into what has been
described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Reports from the UN Fact-Finding
Mission on Sudan revealed widespread destruction, mass killings, and sexual violence,
with civilians suffering the gravest consequences.
Foreign involvement has further exacerbated the crisis, with UN experts reporting
“credible” allegations that the UAE has supplied arms and military equipment to the
Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In December 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the responsibility of
States to prevent the facilitation of war crimes. Shortly after, the US officially determined
that the RSF and allied militias have committed genocide in their war against the
Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and announced sanctions against the RSF leader, along
with seven UAE-based trading companies used by the group to procure weapons.
This conference will bring together legal experts, human rights advocates, and
researchers to examine the ongoing crimes, the role of foreign actors, and avenues for
accountability.
Event in English only.
