The creation of the League of Nations in Geneva in 1920 transformed the city into a key venue for international negotiations, decisions and meetings. In its wake, press representatives from all over the world arrived, creating a new journalistic genre, dedicated to monitoring and analyzing news from international organizations.

To mark Unesco’s World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Geneva Press Club, geneveMonde.ch (FONSART) and the United Nations Library and Archives in Geneva are organizing an evening entitled “New Diplomacy, New Journalism?

This evening will showcase archival documents and audio-visual archives relating to the history of the press in international Geneva. It highlights the underestimated role of international and Swiss journalists in the history of multilateralism. It retraces key historical events and moments, while evoking the daily professional life and rituals of this specific community. From the opening of the first SDN communications office to our 21st century, where journalism and communications sometimes struggle to find their balance, our speakers trace the history of journalists’ associations and bring to life some original personal destinies.

Pierre-Etienne Bourneuf, Scientific Adviser at the United Nations Library and Archives, talks about “The birth of a new journalism”, and presents archive documents from the SDN’s precious collection. Claude Zurcher, editor-in-chief of geneveMonde.ch, brings together and highlights audio-visual documents from the RTS archives from the 1940s to 1970s. Finally, a round table brings together Swiss and international journalists to discuss current links between the media active at the Palais des Nations and the institution.
