With the abrupt decision to shut down the world’s largest development agency, the United States is wiping out numerous achievements in development cooperation and substantially weakening the already fragile UN system, particularly the UN agencies in Geneva, most of which are active in basic service provision and humanitarian aid.
Partner organizations and projects of Swiss development cooperation are also directly affected. Added to this are cuts in Swiss international cooperation, decided by Parliament in December in favor of increasing the military budget, resulting in the discontinuation of various country programs run by Switzerland.
How are development organizations coping with these enormous challenges? What are the short-term consequences? And are there long-term opportunities for Swiss development cooperation and development policy?
Two months before the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, which will take place from June 30 to July 3, 2025, in Seville, the directors and experts of Alliance Sud will discuss ways to overcome the deadlock in international cooperation.
Discussions will be held alternately in English and French.
