The 2024 Francophonie Summit will be held on October 4th and 5th, 2024, in Paris under the theme “Create, Innovate, and Undertake in French.” Following the 18th Summit in Tunisia in 2022, the 19th Francophonie Summit will be a major event, both diplomatically and politically, economically and culturally, with the French language as a unifying factor. Viewed from Geneva, the questions it raises are numerous and urgent. What place and role does the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) have on the international stage? What role do Switzerland, a member of the OIF since 1996, and Geneva play within the international organization? Cooperation between the OIF and the UN has been governed since 2021 by a resolution reviewed every two years by the UN Assembly: what major advances have been made in this cooperation in areas such as sustainable development, digital technology, security, and human rights?

The Geneva Press Club has invited two fascinating and expert personalities for a discussion: Henri Monceau and Frédéric Esposito.

Henri Monceau has been the Permanent Observer of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) to the United Nations Office since June 2023. Before his appointment in Geneva, Mr. Monceau was the Director of Economic and Digital Francophonie at the OIF. From 2017 to 2020, he was the Permanent Observer of the OIF to the UN in Geneva and Vienna. Frédéric Esposito is a political scientist and lecturer at the Global Studies Institute at the University of Geneva since 2013, where the institute offers a Master’s in African Studies. He is also the Director of the Bachelor’s program in International Relations, President of Human Rights Week, and Director of the University Security Observatory (OUS) within the GSI.

Moderation: Isabelle Falconnier, Director of the Geneva Press Club, and Luisa Ballin, journalist accredited to the UN.

The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and a reception.
