After more than 20 years of negotiations, members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) are closer than ever to reaching a deal that could curb harmful fisheries subsidies. They’ll have that opportunity when ministers gather for WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference from June 12 through June 15, 2022, in Geneva.
Hear from seven experts from around the world—hailing from Asia, to Latin America, to Europe, to the U.S.—as they discuss why it’s critical that ministers take action this week and what’s at stake for marine life, the ocean, and the humans who depend on it.
Why: Overfishing is the greatest threat to marine biodiversity—more than 34% of global fish stocks are currently overfished, according to the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization. Yet governments hand out an estimated $22 billion each year in harmful subsidies to their fishing fleets, incentivizing more fishing than the ocean can sustainably handle. In 2015, world leaders agreed to reach a WTO agreement by 2020 to end harmful fisheries subsidies under UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 Target 6. We are now 526 days past that deadline.
