The term “Global South” has regained prominence in political discourse, particularly in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions and strategic realignments worldwide.
It is often used as a broad term for developing countries facing systemic challenges such as poverty, debt, food insecurity, and the devastating effects of climate change.
However, beyond these economic and structural challenges, the Global South is also undergoing profound political transformations. While democratic structures exist in various forms, the principles of democracy and human rights remain at the heart of contemporary political debates.
- How do these nations define and uphold democratic values ?
- What frameworks exist to protect minority rights ?
- How do these issues fit into evolving regional and global dynamics ?
Objectives
This event aims to:
- Examine the evolution of democratic definitions and practices in the Global South.
- Analyze the current state of minority rights (ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender-based, etc.).
- Discuss the role of civil society, media, and grassroots movements in promoting democratic governance.
- Explore the impact of external factors—international governance, development aid, geopolitical influences—on democracy and human rights in these regions.
