5e Assises Presse & démocratie: “Are all the media going to die?
Will the media all die out in French-speaking Switzerland? That’s the question the Geneva Press Club asked itself at the 5th Assises Presse & démocratie, held on November 22, 2024. The event was led by Frédéric Lelièvre, President of the Geneva Press Club, and Isabelle Falconnier, its Director.
Relive the event through replays of the two roundtables tackling key media issues: “SLAPP lawsuits and preliminary injunctions: how journalists are silenced in Switzerland” and “Print isn’t dead yet!”. Also, don’t miss the keynote conversation with Etienne Jornod, a pharmaceutical industry leader who successfully brought his entrepreneurial expertise to the esteemed NZZ. The program also featured a series of brief presentations showcasing “2024 Media Innovations in French-speaking Switzerland!”.

In response to investigations critical of them, multinationals, government institutions, political figures and oligarchs are taking more and more legal action. SLAPPs are a major threat to freedom of expression. What are the attack and defense strategies available to the parties? Why are Swiss laws becoming, in the words of RSF, the “Achilles’ heel of press freedom”? Media testimonials.

“Paper has not said its last word”
The written press is undergoing a transformation, whether willingly or unwillingly, and is now read as much, or even more depending on the title, on digital media as on paper. However, paper has not said its last word. New print magazines make paper an exemplary added value. And above all, how can we avoid losing readers who swear by paper?
