United Arab Emirates: Giving a voice to the victims
United Arab Emirates: Giving a voice to the victims
While the United Arab Emirates strive to build an image of a modern and liberal state, human rights violations in the country continue to be ignored or denied by the authorities. Behind this elaborate façade, constructed by a sophisticated communication strategy, arbitrary arrests, torture and other cruel and inhuman treatment, as well as unfair trials remain systematic in the country.
This conference aims to bring together victims from all walks of life for the first time in Geneva, to testify on the abuses they suffered at the hands of the Emirati security services.
Beyond the importance of shedding light on a reality which remains largely ignored by the media, giving a voice to the victims is crucial to put an end to these violations and to the impunity of their perpetrators.
