Ahead of the meeting with Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, on August 21 at 12:15 p.m., the Geneva Press Club invites you to watch the excellent documentary film « UNRWA, 75 ans d’une histoire provisoire » (‘UNRWA, 75 Years of a Temporary Story’).
This documentary, which premiered at the 2025 FIFDH in Geneva this spring, explores the historical foundations of the United Nations agency, created in 1949 to provide services to refugees in the areas of education, health, and sanitation. It questions the agency’s complex role: a lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees or the unintended instrument of a never-ending conflict? How and why has UNRWA, an “apolitical” agency, found itself at the heart of the most political debates of the century? Through compelling testimonies and previously unseen archival footage, the film traces the crises and tragedies that mark its history—one that is inseparable from that of the Palestinian refugees. At a time when its survival hangs by a thread, UNRWA embodies a fascinating paradox, where humanitarian aid and politics are deeply intertwined, shaping both the uncertainties and the future of a people in search of justice.
A picture by Lyana Saleh and Nicolas Wadimoff.
