The Sri Lankan state has committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Tamil people. Since 1948, successive governments have carried out state-sponsored oppression intended to dismantle the Tamil Nation. These actions continue today as part of the ongoing Tamil Genocide. Sri Lanka’s persistent unwillingness to take meaningful steps toward accountability and remedial justice makes it undeniably clear that only a fully internationally-owned credible, independent, investigative and prosecutorial mechanism—one that has the trust and confidence of the victims and survivors — can uncover the truth, hold perpetrators accountable, and deliver remedial justice. The recent Chemmani exhumations bring renewed international attention to mass graves in the North and East of Sri Lanka and compel a renewed sense of urgency to break the entrenched cycle of impunity and the continued evasion of justice by the perpetrators.
This event will explore international legal and multilateral frameworks and guidelines that are relevant to advancing accountability in Sri Lanka. With the participation of expert panelists in international law, human rights and civil society, this event will foster an understanding of the current situation in Sri Lanka, human rights and international law implications related to accountability in Sri Lanka emphasizing the importance of global solidarity and exploring avenues to enhance and complement the multilateral system’s ability to advance international accountability in Sri Lanka.
