This event situates the legacy of expansionism and militarism in East Asia within the broader context of the global evolution of human rights. It critically examines how both militarism and expansionism erode essential human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and various conventions that address issues such as torture, women’s rights, children’s rights, racial discrimination, and civil liberties.

The conference will delve into both contemporary and historical impacts of militarism and expansionism.  It will begin with a modern perspective, highlighting the unlawful US invasion of Venezuela and the US’ current expansionistic ambitions towards Canada and Greenland, as well as their implications for East Asia.  Following this, informed discussions will allow speakers to reflect on the historical atrocities linked to militarism and expansionism, and the associated human rights violations in East Asia.

By analysing these ongoing transnational human rights violations and drawing lessons from historical events, IPLSA aims to enhance international accountability mechanisms, protect the collective rights of marginalised populations, and prevent the resurgence of militarism and expansionism in the 21st century.
