Former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, was sentenced on 13 March 2015 for ordering the army, during his tenure as President in 2012, to arrest the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court of Maldives, Judge Abdulla Mohamed. Justice Abdulla Mohamed was abducted by the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) during the night of 16 January 2012 and held incommunicado for 72 hours. Subsequently, he was detained for 21 days in a military establishment without access to his family or lawyers.

His arrest and detention were widely condemned by the legal and international community. Mr Nasheed admitted ordering the abduction of Judge Abdulla but did not file an appeal in the Maldivian Courts. Instead, he submitted a Communication with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on 12 May 2015.

The Government of Maldives will submit its response on Friday 10 July 2015 to the UN Working Group.
